If you are looking for a ride that captures some of Sydney’s coastline and temperate rainforest in one, this 122km loop is a standout. Heading south from the city into the Royal National Park, this favourite MC route offers a perfect blend of steady climbing, terrific descents, and a few of the most iconic coastal views in New South Wales.
Here is why this loop is a favorite for MC Velo.
The ride begins with an unavoidable transition from the East toward the more open, undulating roads of the south. The first leg is all about rhythm where the Old Princes Highway brings a consistent, rolling terrain that is a good warm-up before the real climbing begins. You will enjoy the return leg on it.
As we reach Helensburgh, the roads really open up. The gradient is steady and rewarding, leading us to the spectacular Stanwell Tops. As we crest the hill and look out over the Pacific Ocean to the Sea Cliff Bridge, you’ll understand why this is one of the most photographed spots in NSW. It is a mandatory stop to soak in the views, though we suggest saving the caffeine cravings for later in the ride.
After the descent from the tops, you enter the Royal National Park. This is the highlight. The road winds through lush, ancient rainforest and over rolling hills that offer rare beauty found so close to Sydney. The winding rollers are a playground for those with the legs to attack them, while the steady climb out at Waterfall awaits.
No solid day is complete without a proper pit stop. Sutherland is a perfect point on this route for options such as bakeries and cafes, or just a quick one at 7-11. It’s ideal to regroup and refuel before the final fast-paced run back toward the East.
